Registration for Project 2009: Lakefront Station is underway!

Welcome to all new visitors to the annual Cleveland Design Competition and Welcome Back to those of you who have followed prior Cleveland ideas competitions Project 2007: Irishtown Bend and Project 2008: interPLAY!

Project 2009: Lakefront Station focuses on a prominent downtown site at the north end of Cleveland's historic Mall and proposes a 21st century transportation center to accommodate existing regional transportation needs and proposed high speed intercity rail service. This location along the lakefront in Downtown Cleveland is the same location where the Daniel Burnham-led 1903 Group Plan proposed a union station and more recently, the Cleveland City Planning Commission adopted the 2004 Waterfront District Plan which proposes a multi-modal transportation center at this site.

Designs for this new transportation center will provide the city with a state-of-the-art rail station ready to support high speed passenger rail service, a facility capable of integrating and balancing the needs of various transportation modes, and a significant pedestrian connection from the Mall to Cleveland's lakefront.

On December 18th, 2008, Kathryn Lincoln, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, and Armando Carbonell, Senior Fellow and Chairman of Lincoln's Department of Planning and Urban Form, announced the winners of this year's competition at West 78th Street Studios in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood. Over two hundred people attended the reception to view the exhibition of all competition entries and to hear the announcement of the competition's notable designs as chosen by our distinguished jury. Three Prizes and additional Noteworthy Submissions were revealed.

CLEVELAND DESIGN COMPETITION
Design Challenge Envisions Lakefront Tunnel and Pathway as a Destination for Intergenerational Play

CLEVELAND – The second annual Cleveland Design Competition launched in August 2008, soliciting design solutions for the site surrounding the West 65th Street Tunnel in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood. Each year, the competition introduces a challenge for the design of an under-utilized or high-profile Cleveland site for solutions in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design.

Project 2008: interPLAY was an open, single-stage ideas competition focusing on activating an existing multipurpose path and tunnel through intergenerational play. The competition site is located a few minutes west of downtown Cleveland in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood at the northern terminus of West 65th. Participants were asked to design an intergenerational playscape that activates the residual space around an existing multipuprose pathway connecting Cleveland’s west side neighborhoods to Edgewater Park and Lake Erie. While the pathway at the competition site is already used by residents and visitors of all generations and backgrounds, it functions solely as a passageway, precluding interaction and sustained activity. Designers were asked to go beyond existing convention to propose inclusive and creative solutions that elevate community play design.

The jury for Project 2008: interPLAY included Casey Jones, Partner, joneskroloff in Bloomfield Hills, MI; Jawaid Haider, Professor of Architecture, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA; Barry Richards, Senior Associate/Studio Leader at the Rockwell Group in New York, NY; Patricia Stevens, Chief of Park Planning at the Cleveland Metroparks, Cleveland, OH; and Cathy Whitehouse, Principal and Chief Educator at The Integenerational School in Cleveland, OH.

On December 18th, 2008, Kathryn Lincoln, chariwoman of the board of directors of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, the 2008 awards sponsor, and Armando Carbonell, senior fellow and Chairman of the Department of Planning and Urban Form, at the Lincoln Institute, announced the winners at a public reception and exhibition held at The West 78th Street Studios in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood. The announcement of the winners was accompanied by the display of over fifty-five competition entries sent in from teams in twelve different countries.

Nini Spagl and Gerald Haselwanter of Vienna, Austria were awarded the $2,500 first prize for a well-illustrated submission that activated the site through a landscape with seasonal variation and a combination of successful active and passive play opportunities. Runner-up proposals were awarded to the team of Slyvain Delboy, Dimitri Boutleux, and Sarah Kassler of San Francisco, California for the $1,000 second prize, and the $500 third prize was awarded to Elise Shelley and James Roche of Toronto, Canada. This year, these five teams had submissions recognized as Noteworthy Projects for the interest and discourse generated at the juried review: Katherine Holmok, Leann Andrews, and Matt Watons of Parma, Ohio; Jenn Tharp, Nancy Lonnett Roman, and Sara Thompson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Jason Slatinsky and Gina Robinson of Charlotte, North Carolina; David Krebs, Lindsay Fallert, John Swidrak, Bryan Black, and Ian Rosby of Cleveland, Ohio; and Donguk Lee and Doosan Baek of Seoul, South Korea.

The Competition Brief and Resources are available for download on the competition website (www.clevelandcompetition.com/resources.html). In addition, registration for individuals and teams is open through November 7th, and submissions must be received no later than November 21st at 5:00pm EST.

Any questions may be emailed to the questions@clevelandcompetition.com through October 31st - answers will be posted on the competition weblog through the questions deadline, made available for all.

Competition entrants will design intergenerational play landscapes, pavilions, architecture, and/or artistic interventions for fun, leisure, activity and amusement around an existing multipurpose pathway that connects Cleveland's west side neighborhoods with Lake Erie. Designs will create an inventive recreational amentity and community gathering space for the people of the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood - elevating the site around the pathway from a passageway to a play destination and creating a landmark for the increased awareness of the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood.

"Cleveland, Ohio's Detroit Shoreway neighborhood is changing. In the last decade, the neighborhood has seen significant investment in arts and culture, renovation of aging housing, and the replacement of lakefront industrial areas with housing and public spaces. As urban neighborhoods like Detroit Shoreway become more economically and generationally diverse, it becomes increasingly important to provide viable, active community play environments that bring together residents of different ages, classes and backgrounds. Too often, play environments are poorly planned and generically programmed. This presents an incredible opportunity for designers to invent truly imaginative play spaces that bring diverse communities together.

Project 2008: interPLAY challenges entrants to propose active and passive recreation along an existing multipurpose path that connects Cleveland's west side neighborhoods to Edgewater Park and Lake Erie. Entrants must design an intergenerational playscape that activates the residual space around the pathway; enhancing one of Cleveland's few pedestrian connections to the lakefront..."

Project 2008 Site Visit

The 2008 Cleveland Design Competition site, located a few miles west of downtown Cleveland in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood, is situated at the northern terminus of West 65th Street at the intersection of West 65th and Father Caruso Drive. The site's predominant use is as a multi-purpose pedestrian passageway between the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood and Edgewater Park along Lake Erie. (see map below for aerial of site area)

Project 2008: interPLAY is south of Edgewater Park along the Lake Erie shoreline and a short walk north of the Gordon Square Arts District centered at West 65th Street and Detroit. New and turn-of-the-century housing mixed with industrial uses are the site's immediate neighbors - a Norfolk-Southern rail line runs across the site and over the pedestrian tunnel.

WELCOME to the second annual Cleveland Design Competition!

On Friday, August 22nd, 2008, the second annual Cleveland Design Competition will open for registration as we launch Project 2008: interPLAY. Maintaining a focus on under-utilized sites, the competition will solicit thoughtful design solutions to Cleveland's unique urban challenges and inherent design opportunities.

This year's competition is set within the condition of population migration back into urban neighborhoods and the need to develop effective social infrastructure to sustain existing populations and attract new residents. As urban cores and inner ring suburbs become more economically and generationally diverse, it is becoming increasingly important to provide viable, active environments capable of fostering interaction despite cultural differences.

For years, play spaces and public recreation facilities have devolved to a great extent into intellectually limiting environments that prescribe specific activities and stint spontaneous interaction. False presumptions of appropriate activities or underprogrammed spaces has left many public parks and plazas underutilized - whether occupied for limited times of day (or seasons of the year), used by a single age group, or serving singular skills and interests. For Project 2008: interPLAY, it will be critical for entrants to rethink social/recreation programming and consider the types of interactions and emotions that a well designed intergenerational public space can elicit.

The Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood is a dramatically changing Cleveland community seeing significant investments in arts and culture, new dining and shopping destinations, renovations of aging housing, and the replacement of lakefront industrial areas with housing and public spaces. Projects transforming and redefining the community range from an eco-village, to the development of a $100 million housing neighborhood on 13-acres overlooking Lake Erie, and the multi-million dollar decommissioning of the West Shoreway from a high speed roadway to a pedestrian scaled, tree line boulevard.

For the ease and accessibility of competition registration, the payment and registration process is now available on the Cleveland Design Competition website.

The two step process includes online payment for individual/team or studio entries provided by Paypal (a paypal account is not required for payment) and the completion of an online form. Shortly after successful completion of the registration form, the primary contact for each entry will be issued a unique identification number via email.

To start the online registration process, follow the "Online Registration" link at the bottom of the competition homepage or go directly to the Registration page. Registration and payment by mail continues to be a valid method of registration (download the Registration Form from the 'Downloads' page). The competition registration deadline is April 16, 2007.
