Competition Plans, Studies and Resources

The Cleveland Design Competition "Resource" page (www.clevelandcompetition.com/resources.html) has been updated to include several relevant studies and plans for the Irish Town Bend competition site. The growing list of resources includes:

"The Natural Flats: A Field Guide to Habitat in Unexpected Places"
"Flats Oxbow Long-Range Development Plan - Plan Update"
"Advancing the Regeneration of the Cuyahoga Valley"
Irish Town Bend Archaeological District
Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail Extension
Cuyahoga River Valley Intermodal Connector Study
"North Cuyahoga Valley Corridor Concept Plan"
"CMHA plans park with splendid view"
"Connecting Cleveland: 2020 Citywide Plan"
US Army Corp of Engineers Hydrographic Surveys
High Performance Shoreline Management System

In addition, a running list of resource links can be found on the "Resource" page. While it is the organizers' intent to provide as many related resources as possible, this page is an ever-changing, incomplete list of resources related to the competition site. Entrants are strongly encouraged to utilize the supplied resources to understand the challenges and expectations of the competition site and its relationship to the greater Cuyahoga Valley and City of Cleveland. Competition submissions are not required to address every (or any) plan that has previously addressed the competition site.

The Natural Flats

In parallel with February 16th's announcement of the competition jurors, Cleveland artist Don Harvey will discuss his documentation of the natural history of Cleveland's Flats at the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (space is limited). In May 2006, with Cleveland Public Art, Harvey photographed the unexpected wildlife in the industrial valley. The result, "The Natural Flats: A Field Guide to Habitat in Unexpected Places," consists of a self-guided tour of Flats' natural landscapes accompanied by photographs and writings by the region's leading naturalists.

Visit the Natural Flats page on the competition website (www.clevelandcompetition.com/naturalflats.html) for a preview of Harvey's work and obtain the tour guide at the following locations: Cleveland Public Art, CanalWay Center, Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
